Governing bodies that regulate the laws regarding licenses in the beauty industry have different laws for each state in the U.S. You must contact your states governing body (aka state board, professional licensing department, regulatory committee, etc.) for the requirements regarding your instructor/educator/manager/jr instructor (etc.) training license. For instance, in some states, if you have all ready been licensed and practicing as a cosmetologist, barber, nail technician or esthetician for a certain number of years – you may not have to complete any hours in a college because your experience in the field will offset those hours – but you will still need to take a licensing exam. In other states, you must complete the required hours for instructor training. Still, in other states, a license may not be required to become an instructor in the field of cosmetology. If you do not have to take “hours” at a school, but you do need to take a licensing exam, you will still need to study for the exam. We do have online cosmetology, esthetics and nail tech practice exams (and in the future you will want to reccomend them to your students preparing for their state board exam), however, we do not have online instructor / educator training exams or free interactive educator test samples. to prepare for the written portion of your state board exam.
You may be required by your state to take both a written and a practical exam to become a licensed instructor/ educator. Your state board may require you to provide them with a lesson plan and implement that lesson plan before an examiner or group of examiners. In other words, you may be required to demonstrate to them how you would teach a class (and provide them with an outline of how you plan to do so). Since each state may have different requirements for the practical, hands-on, portion of the licensing exam for educators, try your best to find someone at the state board who will give you as many details as possible regarding their expectations for the practical exam. If you find that you are receiving very little advise or help from the state board (or regulatory commission, or licensing department), then you may want to contact a local school for advice. Some schools may say that you have to take their course, while others will offer you a short class that only lasts a matter of a few hours (which is much less expensive). Still, you may find a generous individual in the business who would be willing to tell you what you need to know, and then study on your own. So, we never advise you to only speak with one school or individual in this matter. Be certain to check several sources, as this may save you a large amount of money, as well as precious time.
